Here are some tips that will help with your family photography for Xmas
This is the time of year that everyone in Perth and all over the world is trying to take good family photos.
Even if you’re only using your iPhone you can still get outstanding photography results. One of the main things to remember when taking all types of photo’s is to remove or blur the background. In the photo below I achieved this by using a Flash. As with all photography lighting is the most important item. Using a flash that didn’t have anything to bounce off in the background made all the distracting items disappear, allowing your eyes to focus on the subjects.
The other important step that most guides forget is to take the photo early in the night before everyone has had a few to many 🙂
I like to get the adults setup and ready before calling over any children. This allows me get the lighting and composition perfect before the kids come over with limited patience.
Before taking any photo, family portrait or not you must consider your composition. Composition is always done before any of your subjects are needed. How will you frame your image? Do you have any leading lines that can be used to increase the visual impression of your photo?
This photo was taken using a Canon 7D, The ISO was set to 100 (Not a setting i would normally use at night but because the flash was on it didn’t pose a problem) 85mm lens (I like to use 85mm or more when shooting portrait photography, if you have limited space you might want use a shorter lens). F5.0 (I didn’t need to blur the background so F5 allowed for a very sharp photo). Shutter speed was set to 1/125
